Thirty-six-year-old Irene Dunphy didn't plan on dying any time soon, but that's exactly what happens when she makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel after a night bar-hopping with friends. She finds herself stranded on Earth as a ghost, where the food has no taste, the alcohol doesn't get you drunk, and the sex...well, let's just say "don't bother". To make matters worse, the only person who can see her - courtesy of a book he found in his school library - is a 14-year-old boy genius obsessed with the afterlife. Unfortunately, what waits in the Great Beyond isn't much better.

Stuck between the boring life of a ghost in this world and the terrifying prospect of three-headed hell hounds, final judgment, and eternal torment in the next, Irene sets out to find a third option - preferably one that involves not being dead anymore. Can she wipe the slate clean and get a second chance before it's too late?

Hereafter Afterlife Volume 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Terri Bruce Amy B Martin Books

I absolutely loved this book (audiobook) The author had me from the very first words. I was completely enthralled with Irene's story which has layer upon layer of drama, intrigue, real emotion. I felt so much as I went along on her journey. I laughed, I stopped several times to ponder different aspects of Irene's discoveries about life, and beyond. I absolutely adore Jonah he is a breath of fresh air and made an impressive, lovable "Jiminy Cricket" I couldn't help but laugh so many times both at the expense of as well as along with the characters. I also found my heart pounding, holding my breath during some pretty traumatic scenes for Irene, as well as the times that I actually cried both with sadness and at other times because I was so deeply touched, especially by Jonah. Wise far beyond his years. The author just has done such an amazing job. I can't even fathom where she came up with this story, but can definitely appreciate the talent she had shared with us all. Finally I have to give it up for the narrator. She is so expressive and really made Irene, Jonah, and all of the other characters come alive. I was very generously given a complimentary copy of this audiobook for an honest review. I can't wait to finish writing this review so I can seek out the second in the series, Thereafter. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's an awesome adventure.

Hereafter Afterlife Volume 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Terri Bruce Amy B Martin Books Reviews

Interesting ideas that make you think, when you aren't so wrapped up in the story you stop thinking and just turn pages. Fun read, quick read, yet raises questions that leave you wondering about life, death, and people in your life.
This was an interesting view of the first stage of continued existence after death. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Hereafter is full of snappy dialogue and humorous moments, yet it has a thoughtful side which suited the subject. I loved how well the two main characters, Irene and Jonah, took to one another, never giving up on each other, but never being anything but honest with their words. Despite Irene's sometimes harshness, she was a character that really drew me in and made me care about her. I could agree with all her range of emotions over being recently dead.

This was a fast read because I couldn't put it down for long!
I received a free copy of the audio version of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I also own this book in the kindle edition as well.

So, the first thing I have to say is that Amy B. Martin was a fantastic choice for a narrator. The last audio book with a female narrator sounded too robotic. This one wasn't. At all. Which made it infinitely more enjoyable to me.

A 30-something party girl finds the hereafter is not what she expects in this intriguing debut paranormal that steps beyond the tropes.

HEREAFTER is smoothly written and a fast read, yet it leaves you thinking about what our ghostly legends are really trying to tell us. A frequent YA reader, I find this depth and adult perspective refreshing.

Jonah, a living 14-year-old boy obsessed with the afterlife, helps Irene unravel the mysteries hinted at by folklore and religion. She even gains a different understanding of going "into the light." I find Jonah to be a far more likeable character than self-absorbed Irene--I wanted to scream at her sometimes! She has a lot to learn. Her journey propels the book forward and keeps you wanting to find out what happens next.
As a ghost, Irene feels so much like herself that she finds it hard to accept that the afterlife can't be the same as her old life (i.e. lots of hanging out in bars with friends) without all the downsides (e.g. jobs, chores, family obligations, and hangovers.) Although Irene is someone who has to learn everything the hard way, as her father told her once, she luckily finds early on a good (though underage) friend in Jonah, a teenager from Irene's neighborhood who has investigated theories of the afterlife and experimented enough with out-of-body experiences that he can see dead people like Irene. Mature and sensible, Jonah is like a 36-year-old in a 14-year-old's body, while with Irene it's more like the other way around.

Hereafter is a contemporary, paranormal fantasy that uses dark humor (also sarcasm, innovative insults, and ironic observations) to reflect on the serious topic of how best to live, and includes numerous factoids (mostly from Jonah) on beliefs about an afterlife in different cultures and at different times. There's a bit of sexual tension but the author doesn't go overboard with sex scenes, keeping readers interested instead with tight dialogue and nuggets gleaned from her extensive research. Readers looking for a lighthearted book that still touches on some serious themes or for a novel with fantasy elements that doesn't feature a sexy vampire huntress or a paranormal detective agency should definitely give Hereafter a try.
