Paul loves his surrogate family, a group of street urchins. They take him in when he is banned from the loving embrace of his foster mother at age five. During the next ten years they learn together how to blend in, how to become invisible, how to climb the steep walls of the nobles' gardens, and how to vanish in the narrow alleys behind the capital's timber frame houses.
Together, they survive.
But on Mother's Day, when the king begs the goddess for a miracle, Paul's life changes forever. Without his friends he must face new danger ... the life of a crown prince.
And if the king discovers his secret, the executioner's ax waits for him.
For lovers of medieval knights and fantasy from 12 years up

I'm too old for this.Really. I'm not the target audience, which is the middle grade or lower end of the young adult spectrum. So at times I got bored or snorted at corny lines because, well, I'm 21.
That said, this was a solid read that I believe will appeal to tweens and young teens. The story follows Paul, a street kid when, in a The Prince and the Pauper like twist, he gets switched with the crown prince. (The author can be forgiven for the similarity because 1) There are really no new story ideas out there and 2) Being German, Mark Twain just wasn't on her radar as much as it is on Americans'). Anyway, the similarities between the two end there. Once Paul gets switched, he finds himself in the middle of an enemy invasion by an evil wizard who can control people!
Like a true plucky street urchin a la Aladdin, Paul uses his wits to save the day and even get the girl. But the journey along the way will be sure to entertain the young or the young- at- heart who enjoy children's fantasy such as The Chronicles of Narnia .
(Also, though this is an indie book written by a German author, there were only a smattering of typos and errors, and the author's English is as good any native speaker's.)

Urchin King Historical Fantasy edition by Katharina Gerlach Children eBooks Reviews
No, it's not another version of the Prince and the Pauper - it's wonderful, fresh, and original! I could smell the smells and taste the tastes, and within a page I was already eager to find out what adventures I was going to be taken on. Fun, exciting, and wonderfully fluid reading that my teenagers have already stolen my from me for. I had not read Katharina Gerlach before, but this makes me want to find more of her books!
I picked up the Urchin King and found it very enjoyable and a great read. From the first chapter it captured me with a solid storyline (the theme was very intriguing), lots of action, and good character development. It kept me wondering what would happen next and I really felt for the characters. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the genre. Pick up a copy and get involved with Paul, the main character.
Katharina Gerlach is an awesome writer. I'm not sure how many books she has out but I'm going to hunt them down and buy them. I would love to see more of THIS world.
Do you enjoy young adult fantasy? Do you like a well-written adventure story with magic? Then you need to try this book.
Paul is a beggar who lives with other street kids in a land where when twins are born, the second twin is killed at birth. To his amazement, Paul finds out that he is actually a second twin, spared from death by being raised away from his heritage. When Paul replaces his highborn disabled twin, his adventures begin in earnest. Will he be able to save the kingdom?
I loved this story. I could not put it down till I finished. I read all night. Wonderful fantasy story. Well paced, page turning and engaging characters. I was totally lost in this story. Others have compared this story to the Prince and the Pauper, but this is not that story, but told just as well in a similar time period. I will read more by this author.
I
Paul, the quintessential street urchin, has spent the last nine years of his life barely eking out an existence in the back alleys and public squares of the town of Wynburgh -- completely unaware of his secret heritage. All of this changes when he's roped into an elaborate scheme that has him taking the place of the sweet, yet mentally challenged heir to the throne. Placed squarely in the path of a conniving wizard and an evil necromancer, Paul has to use all of his street smarts to outwit them and save the members of the royal family he has come to love.
Author Katharina Gerlach successfully combines an easy to read writing style with some first-rate storytelling in this appealing fantasy novel for young adults. Even though the set up, at first, seems to be similar to Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper," the similarity ends once you get past the "pair of princes who `coincidentally' resemble each other." "Urchin King" is a completely original story that stands on its own and is a lot of fun. Recommended.
Paul is a street kid, an urchin who mostly lives with other orphans on the cold, hungry streets of a medieval-style fantasy kingdom. His surrogate mother, forced to cast him out by her rich but heartless employer, loves him but can no longer help him without losing her own home and job. The kingdom has a rule that says the second-born twin must be killed at birth, so Paul is unaware that he is, himself, a second-born twin, and that his (much plumper and more richly dressed) identical brother is the heir to the throne. The trouble is that the crown prince isn't king material. He's a lovely boy, but very slow to learn, with no hope of becoming a commanding presence or a wise ruler.
So, someone who knows the secret pulls a few strings, (you'll get this joke later), and Paul finds himself installed in the palace as his brother, the crown prince! As much as Paul yearns for the love of his real parents, he also misses his urchin "family" and his surrogate mother. And when the King, who isn't in on the trick, puts the street urchin on a horse for a hunting party--well, Paul worries mightily about being found out and killed for real!
Then there is the enemy kingdom and their sneaky plan.
At no time did this story become tedious or uninteresting. I felt so bad for Paul when he was hungry and lost, then so worried when he was a prisoner in the castle!
You should read this for yourself, because my fingers are getting tired.
